Meet the Owner

Lucky Barbero, LCSW

I am a Filipino-American immigrant, whose journey to becoming a therapist has been shaped by both my personal experiences and my academic path. After earning my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University Los Angeles and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Southern California, I began working in various areas of the mental health field as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), including Acute Mental Health, Substance Abuse, and working with the Incarcerated Population.

Throughout my career, I have developed a broad range of skills in individual, group, family, and couples therapy. Utilizing evidence-based interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I strive to support each client in their path toward emotional resilience and well-being. I am also well-versed in teaching essential coping skills, such as Mindfulness Practices, tailoring these tools to meet the unique needs of each individual. My passion for helping others and my commitment to providing quality mental health care drives me to continually seek the best outcomes for those I serve.

My cultural background deeply informs my approach to therapy. As someone who has navigated the complexities of balancing two cultural worlds, I understand the unique challenges faced by immigrants and individuals from diverse backgrounds. As such, I am deeply committed to making a meaningful impact in the field of mental health by integrating cultural competency into my private practice, ensuring that diverse perspectives and experiences are valued and understood. My goal is to offer personalized, compassionate care that respects and honors the diverse backgrounds of my clients facing various mental health challenges.

How can I be your ally throughout a life-changing journey?

Making the decision to seek help is not easy, and I commend you for taking this courageous step. If you've been wrestling with the idea of seeking support for months or even years, I'm here to tell you that you've found the right place.

Do you ever feel like no one truly understands what you're going through? Are cultural or family expectations making it difficult for you to open up?

You may find yourself balancing the pursuit of personal goals with the weight of cultural expectations, which can often feel overwhelming and isolating. You might be eager to explore how your thoughts and beliefs shape your emotions and behaviors, wondering why certain patterns keep emerging in your life. Perhaps you're looking for practical tools and strategies to help you manage stress effectively, improve your relationships, and build a stronger sense of self-esteem in the face of societal pressures. You may also be grappling with the desire to honor your cultural values while seeking personal fulfillment, and that can be a delicate balance.

My expertise is in treating teens and young adults in the Filipino or Asian community who are suffering from anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and self-esteem challenges, particularly in the context of intergenerational trauma and complex family dynamics. I provide therapy in a safe, supportive, and nurturing space where you can openly explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Working with me feels empowering and collaborative, as I provide guidance while ensuring that each client's unique background is respected and integrated into our therapeutic process.

As a Filipino-American immigrant, I have a deep understanding of diverse cultural experiences. I recognize that every individual’s cultural identity profoundly shapes their worldview, values, and experiences. I will help you navigate life’s challenges with a keen awareness of how cultural factors—such as family expectations, community dynamics, and cultural norms—can impact mental health. And for my fellow Filipinos, I offer bilingual sessions in English and Tagalog to provide a comfortable space where you can express yourself freely.

Are you unsure about what to expect in therapy? Have you ever struggled with finding goals that feel true to who you are?

During your first session with me, you can expect a welcoming, compassionate space where we begin to build trust and understanding. I’ll ask about what brought you to therapy, your personal history, and any challenges you're facing. We’ll explore your goals for therapy and identify what matters most to you, ensuring your goals align with your personal values. We’ll break them down into manageable steps, focusing on practical outcomes that make progress feel achievable. As your journey unfolds, we’ll adjust these goals together, allowing space for flexibility and growth. I encourage open communication and aim to ensure that you feel comfortable, respected, and heard from the start. This session sets the foundation for our work together, focusing on creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment tailored to your needs. In our weekly therapy sessions, I will help you gain a deeper understanding of the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we’ll work to identify and challenge unhelpful or negative thought patterns that may be contributing to your emotional distress or unhealthy behaviors. By bringing these patterns to light, you will be empowered to question their validity and develop more balanced, realistic perspectives.
